227 drug shortages: how to keep a safe medicine reserve

What should my family do about drug shortages 2026?

ASHP reported that active US drug shortages rose to 227 in the second quarter of 2026, up for three straight quarters. The FDA's root-cause analysis cites market concentration, contracting practices and overseas manufacturing. Keep a current medication list, plan refills early, and talk to your doctor or pharmacist before changing any medicine.

What happened

ASHP reported that active US drug shortages rose to 227 in the second quarter of 2026, up for three straight quarters. An earlier Becker's report put the first-quarter figure at 223. On June 12, the FDA first listed the chemotherapy drug ifosfamide as in shortage, citing manufacturing issues at Baxter Healthcare.

What it means for your home

Some families rely on one specific medicine. Plan refills early, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before changing a prescription when a product is hard to get.

What to do this week

  • Make a list of every prescription and over-the-counter medicine your family uses.
  • Check when each prescription runs out, and ask for refills early.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether a 90-day supply is an option.
  • Store medicines in a cool, dry place in a labeled organizer.
  • Keep a printed copy of the list in your family emergency folder.
